what is your definiton of Freedom of Speech?

April 4th, 2008  Tagged

As stated in the United States Constitution, Freedom of Speech is a right granted to everyone in the world, unless of course someone abuses the right. When I break down the words of Freedom of Speech, like we did in History class although with our questions, I’d come up with ‘Freedom’ and ‘Speech.’ Freedom basically is the ability to do what we please. In www.dictionary.reference.com, it states and I quote, “The condition of being free of restraints.” It means that we are free to do what we like to do and what we want to do. The word ‘speech’ means the act of speaking. So basically Freedom of Speech means the condition of being free to speak as we wish.  My definition of Freedom of Speech is the right to say what you please but there are limits to this. We can express our selves, ideas, feelings, thoughts as long as we are not threatening, harming, or offending anyone else. “Freedom of Speech is basic to the existence of respect of human dignity.” We can say anything we want to, because it is what we believe in, but there are times when someone doesn’t agree with you. Just because someone doesn’t agree with you or thinks your idea is ridiculous, it is not the end of the world. People have different perspectives of things and some people refuse to believe in anything but their ideas. And this is all okay as long as no one exceeds over the limit by being hurtful or mean. I believe that Freedom of Speech is a very important right (well, all the rights in the Constitution are important). Without the Freedom of Speech, we may not be able to say what we like and we may not be able to put out our opinions for others to hear. If we didn’t say what we wanted to, then we’d be living in a world of lies. Our world would be very un-candid, because we are always ‘posing’ and not saying what are really on our minds.

Really good thoughts about Freedom of Speech. I also think that if we don’t express ourself we will never get to know what other people think and we will never understand what other people want to say. I like how you expressed your ideas. Good job!!

Great job!!! What do you mean, though, by ‘basic to the existence of respect of human dignity’? I really like how you linked both U.S. History AND Literature class to this entry. I never, ever realized that if we had no freedom of speech, our world would be… false. Maybe not completely, but like you stated, it would be ‘un-candid’. I am very grateful that we have freedom of speech, can you imagine the world without it? I was just thinking about, for example, a person talking, talking, talking and then someone not agreeing. For me personally (and Hyerin, you know! :P ), I always have something to say. I always give feedback, so imagine if I did not have the ability to do so. I would be so.. so quiet, and so kept to myself. But the problem is, wouldn’t some sort of anger and frustration build up? Do you think that if we had no freedom of speech, the world would have no or little conflict? I sure do, why do wars start!? I believe it is because something is done or said by another country, therefore another country gets what, mad? Yeah. So.. do you agree- that if we had no freedom of speech, we would have less problems?
    Great job! Keep it upp!

I really like your entry! I like how you said that sometimes when people don’t agree with eachother, you think it’s the end of the world, when actually, people are just expressing themselves. I also like how you said that if we didn’t have freedom of speech, this would be a world of lies. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for replying, primo27, nicoleatkinson, and lucy2424. You know, nicoleatkinson, I have never thought that if we had no freedom of speech, we would have lesser problems, but I think you’re right. Like you said, wars start because of conflicts between people. If people just didn’t talk, maybe wars wouldn’t happen. Maybe Freedom of Speech isn’t that good at all. Although we are able to say what we want to, all that results in speaking is arguments. In the end, I believe that Freedom of Speech has its good and bad sides. And to answer you question, Yes I think that if we had no freedom of speech we would have less problems.
